How Free-Rain™ Works
Catchment Surface
The roof and the lawn are the catchment surfaces for Free-Rain™ rainwater harvesting systems. The roof is generally considered a very clean surface because it does not come in contact with harmful substances. Small amounts of dust are the only type of contaminates and are not considered harmful.A roof is a relatively large surface area that has a high coefficient of surface runoff, meaning that nearly all the rainwater that comes in contact with it is able to be retained. A roof that is 2500 square feet will normally collect almost 70,000 gallons in one year.
The lawn also gives off very clean water because the turf acts as a living filter. Although it retains much of the water that falls on it, 15 percent or more is lost as run-off. Free-Rain™ continually recycles this water for
later use.
Conveyance System
Your existing gutters are the best way to transport rainwater to the storage tank. They are already equipped with gutter guards to remove large debris before it enters the system. The only modification to your existing gutters is a simple extension of the piping to the Free-Rain™ cistern water storage tank. These gutter extensions will be underground and are maintenance-free. Filters can be introduced at this point to allow for debris and contaminants to be caught before entering the tank.Storage System
The storage system is the resting place for the collected water. The Free-Rain™ underground storage system works like any other well and is simply pumped out of the tank when water is needed. Unlike traditional cisterns, the system is underground and not an eyesore on your property. It remains free from evaporation, insects and algae growth.The storage tank comes in a variety of sizes depending on the amount of water required to meet your needs. Typically, a municipal water supply is connected to the tank as a supplemental source to ensure a consistent supply of water, even during droughts.
